Melanerpes formicivorus
Central Canyon
HINHR
10 April
800. Saw 2 birds here, apparently concerned over a
Starling in the top of the (1988) nest tree, while I was watching
a nearby SB Bluebird nest.
May
Birds appear to be going to the 1988 nest hole.
11 June
81525 seen by Blompond; see general M-f. notes. Seems likely
that these birds are hanging out down there a lot the last few days.
1 August
1800. I can see no stored acorns lurk in the known
granary here.
1990
9 January
1300. looked around for stores here and found nothing, either
in the nest tree or over at the "Refuel 1" granary. Is there
no group here? or do they really manage here without any
stored acorns?
31 March
955. 2 birds flushed here: ①♂ Mauve/M #1525 and ②♀ Lareen/M ?
Some sort of group still exists here!
Not much of a clue as to who the ♀ might be - there are no
obvious candidates...
24 April
945-1000. No sign of anyone here.
29 April
655. 1 bird (♂?) sitting in the dead Valley Oak here.
20 May
Cleaned out a Starling nest (5 eggs) from The old nest hole
here.
