1990 Waltr D Koerig Melanerpes fomcicivorus Lower Haystack HNHR 9 January 1130. Counted stores: Main tree: 4908 2° tree : 645 Granany is fairly replete but not stuffed; plus, there are some shells in holes indicating that The peak has passed and that they're already started to deplete their stores. I'd put capacity at, perhaps, 7000 or so (but not more). 31 March 1200. Lots of stores left here. 12 April 1102. All rather quiet here. Checked holes. 1107. Intruder! 3 M / Light #1530 from Plaque. Chased out by 2-3 grids. 18 April 905. Watching for a bit. 921. 4 birds flew in, inc. ①♂ w/Blk-B #1520. ②♂B-BLK/Yel #1521. ③♂Da/m #1046, plus a ♀ who is apparently being guarded. This would probably be a good group to experiment with. 935. Leaving. 23 April 1900. Came up to set ambush in the forest hole on this misty evening. Two birds were in the traditional nest hole, so I checked it, fortunately finding it empty. I set an ambush there as well for good measure. 24 April 600. None in the nest hole, but Mark and I got 8 birds from the forest roost hole: ♀1679, ♂8 1046, 1155, 1520, 1521, 1629, ♀91627, and 1723. A complete route except for the helper ♂ (1724) who was missed in the Feb. census - unlike all these birds. In other words, I think we got them all. ①1724: D.A. 6 Pcl ±2 wks I (temporarily) removed ♂1520 for the experiment, while ♀1627 (a helper ♀ unrelated to the breeder ♀) was brought back so Philip could put a radio on her.
