1989 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes forficivorus Lower Haystack HNHR 20 January 1745. Watched roosting. Saw 7 birds go into the old cut-out hole just below the '75 ValleyOak nest tree over in the side area. Jane reports that one additional bird roosted in the nest hole in the granary. 21 January 1730. Ambushes set at both holes. ? 10 birds roosted in the old nest hole! 22 January. The ambush, done early, got them all, except that I escaped from the bag while I was taking them out (a comparable mass of birds I have not seen in a long time!). But I got 9 - still an all-time record. Caught were: 38 breeders (81046, 81146, and 81155), 5 helpers (861520, 1521, 1628, 1629, and 1427 - the latter thought to already have moved to Blontwoo), and an ub, presumably new breeding ♀ (now 1679). Presumably the bird that got away was one of the 2 helper ♀♀ (1522 or 1627), neither of whom is related to the new breeding ♀ (hence I wonder if either is still here?). The bad news is that I lost my wedding ring in the process. 1 August 1730. Lots of stored acorns still here. As for capacity, The 1° tree looks comparably packed full of holes to when I was counting years ago. The main increase here is in The 2° tree, which I counted as having 1825 ≈ 2000 storage holes. Hence, capacity is up here.
