Walter D. Koenig
Melanerpes formicivorus
1800.
HNHR
21 April
1830. None in any holes here; including the new hole across
the road (across and about 50m up from post 1900 in a Valley
Oak facing School Hill West).
12 May
930. Up at the base of Haystack-Blonquist's granary I found the
body of ♀1554, a helper from 1800. She had been dead several
days, but probably not much longer. Odd! I wonder what
prompted her demise up here?
Her band #942-15783.
3 June
1050. Set up for a shot at 8774 at the nest.
1150. Birds now feeding: 9787, ♂1438, the breeder ♂?, but hard to
tell them apart!
1210. Got him!
1 August
1900. Lots of stores still here: I counted 1030. As for
capacity, my estimate (based on a count) was
1st tree: 2400 → 2800 ≈ 3000.
2nd tree: 400
I doubt very much that their capacity is a great deal
above this.
1990
8 January
1200. Counted stores: 1st tree: 2040 → 2040.
2nd tree: 0
A fair number of the acorns look old, and I bet they're
leftovers from last year. In any case, the 1st tree is fairly
full, and I'd still put capacity in at around 3000.
12 April
945. Several birds over here, inc. a ♀ (not being guarded, apparently)
950. ♂ flew in, ♀ flew off toward live Oak up hill behind granary (?)
1015. There do seem to be 3 birds here, but I wasn't able to get good
IDs on them. Checked holes as well - keep an eye on that Live Oak!
