1990 Walter D Boening Melanerpes formicivorus Knoll HONOR 8 January 1130. Counted stores here: 1230. These birds have done a fine job of renovating the Valley Oak granary just up The Wickenhill trickle from the Y. However, it's hard to give an estimate for the capacity, as many acorns are crammed wedged into crevices of the bark rather than in bonifide storage holes. My guess is that it's ~75% full and could perhaps hold about 1600 acorns if they were lucky. 31 March 815. Watching here. 823♀Mv/(N) #1445 in VO granary. Flew out with acorn after apparently giving a couple of intermittent garricks (!) 835. 2 birds in granary chasing off a ground squirrel: 91445 and 2♂ Red/Green? #1301. 910. 2ⁿ♀♂ or /M #1604. 935. This seems to be about it, at least for today. Birds are l° eating acorns and catkins. (15 April) 91445 at School Hill power struggle this morning. 12 May 1345. Cleared out a starling nest with 4 babies about to fledge from the dead limb sticking out toward 1500 in the big sycamore. 23 May 1730. Bird flushed from the canyon hole! No sounds from inside, at least. 24 May 730. Checked the hole: 3 eggs, incubated. 28 May MTS checked this morning: not hatched yet (but didn't open hole) 29 May MTS checked: nest failed! One cold egg in nest. What happened? 4 June No stored acorns remaining here. 17 June *Group Update* ♀135D, 1605 . last seen 2 Jan '90, gone by 31 March → D.A. 15 Feb ± 1 month.
