1989 1990 Walden D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Y HNHR 11 April 855. ♀1560 up in a tree along the fence line by MacRoberts briefly. 1990 8 January 1100. These birds have drilled a good number of holes in the locust by the barn (at the SE corner, with box #354). Like most locusts, it's difficult to count stores, since there's a lot of space between some of the bark and the wood where lots of extra acorns can hide unseen. In any case, I counted 353 acorns* and will guess that there are on the order of 700 holes in the tree already. These birds have done well replacing the old (locust) granary, which fell some time ago and is now, of course, completely gone. *there may be quite a few more than this, however, but I think there are probably <500. 15 April ♀1560 at School Hill power struggle this morning. Today (or 16 April?) Stamback cleared out a starling nest from the locust nest hole over by the barn. 17 June *Terrory Update* ♀1561. Last seen 14 March, gone by 14 April ~D.A. 29 Mar+20. This bird may have been radiotracked, however, so there may be more information on her than this.
