Melanerpes fornicivorus
LA2
(2 August)
Other areas: 500 (few acorns at the moment)
Total ~ 5000.
1990
18 January
1540. Counted stores: Main tree: 4280
Other areas: 786
These birds have done an amazing job of recovering from the
fire: the burned tree has holes densely packed in all sorts of
places - all drilled since the fire. I'd put capacity at about
5300 - there aren't many unused holes at the moment.
2 April
1055. 2 birds in the "Top" tree flew back to LA2. I checked last
year's hole in the Black Oak just past there, but the limb broke
and the hole is gone.
Lots of acorns left here.
22 April
1000. Chasing! Some genicks! A power struggle?
①♂ Or/DB-wh(n)
in granary. I take it back: this looks like ♂BTE-wh(n)/LB #1234 from Big Tree. He is pretty well ensconced
in the main tree here.
②♀ -LB/Red #1371 drumming next to ♂1234. Possibly 6-8 other
birds here. Does this mean the end of ♂611??
③♀NOBA, drumming; now chased out.
Holy! Wow! ④♂ Mr./Bla-Dea #611 is here! ♂1234 must be a son....
This is perhaps merely an unprovoked uprising?
④♀M/Red #1753 (seen well) in back area defending one
of the trees. ②nd ♀NOBA.
1100. Not sure what's up, but ♂1371 and ♂611 are definitely both here so
there's no vacancy, at least. But, I saw no sign of ♂1116 or of either
