Melanerpes formicivorus
LA2
HNHR
14 July I've decided to rewrite history here. The problem is
with 91371, who we've been assuming came from a (missed)
next late in 1986, and thus is 8611's daughter. In fact,
she was not banded as a baby; rather, Katy saw an
ub♂ feed at the nest here on 17 May 1986, at which time
I figured we'd simply been missing a 3rd NOBA♀.
At this point I will revert to that opinion. This
would mean that 91371 (the NOBA♀ finally caught on
1 Oct '86) is not indigenous to LA2. My guess is that
she's a younger sibling who moved here in 1986, but
she could, of course, have been here earlier. (The return
here of 81116, born in 1985, suggests she was not here then.)
(See back)
The only serious problem with this scenario is the ub♂
seen here fairly regularly between 18 Sept '86 and 11 Sept
'87. The fact is, I have no idea who he is. Maybe he
was from a missed nest (and I suppose I'll keep that
as a possibility), although the group did fledge 5 babies
in 1986 and my guess is that the 2nd nest resulted mainly
out of our paranoia.
Changes include:
95253. Moved here 0 Oct '85 (note she was seen here
on 9 Dec.). Present until 1 Oct '86, when I caught
her and she became 91371.
No 88 ever assumed breeding status (except 8611, 8782).
81116. Returned 0 Apr. 1989. Now a breeder.
2 August 945. Counted stores here: 2250 (all old). Capacity here is
good. My estimates are: Main tree: 4500 (about ½ full)
