1989 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Lower Arnold 2 HNHE 5 June 1300. Confusion here. Did we miss a nest? I don't think so, but there are babies in the near vicinity (Bianca babies? Al's?) that send shivers down my spine. In any case, I'm hanging out here just to try and figure out what's up. These birds have lots of stored acorns left, so it's tempting to expect a nest, even if it would be more incest. 1400. Among other things serving to confuse the issue here is that at least 1 8? is flying to the granary, eating acorns, taking some acorn bits, and then flying up to the top tree where he's apparently feeding the Al fledglings. Are some of the Al breeders from here or something? Noone seems interested in harassing him or anything. 1405. This time a ♀ flew up to the Top Tree. Not sure what's up here, but I'm a little more confident that we aren't missing a blatantly obvious nest. We need to keep an eye on this group, however! 6 June The answer would appear to be that the "Al" nest we banded on 1 June actually belongs to this group! See my Al notes. Note that this was presumably an incestuous mating. 13 June 1400. Here to watch for a spell. #611. 1425. 1 of the babies j Res/LB or #1750. In The granary: 2♂ DB-wt/KrWh ?440.
