1989 1990 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Fanny Arnold HNHR 2 April 1315. Several birds in the trees over by A1 turn out to belong from here: ♂ BLK/M LB/LP-LB #1023 and ♂ M/Red-Yel #835. 2 August 1015. Storage facilities are sort of spread out here, but my guess is that capacity is on the order of 4000. This includes ~2500 in the (new) (dead) granary they built from scratch over on the far side of the ravine from the fenceline which does, by the way, have quite a few acorns still stored in it. 1990 11 January 1200. The group here has apparently entirely abandoned their old storage limbs over by the fenceline, which are all empty, and has switched entirely to the new granary across the ravine, where I counted 2050 acorns. I'd put capacity here at 2500 (for this tree); it's not clear whether to include those old holes or not anymore! Perhaps the entire capacity here should be put at about 3000. 2 April 1045. Still some acorns here. 13 April 1550. Some quarrels and chasing here. Watching the granary. ① ♀ NOBA . ② ♂ DG/M LB/LP-LB #1023. ③ ♂ M/Dr-Yel #835. ④ ♀ M/Red? (possibly ♀1749 from LA2?). With luck, this may be the bird winning. ⑥ ♂ Wh-Or/Blk? (seen well). ⑦ ♂ M/D5 DB/WX(n)/Red #1699. ⑧ ♀ LB? /Red?? Given that there's been no ♀ in this group for awhile, this activity certainly makes sense as a ♀ replacement. ⑨ Leaving. Not sure who everyone is here, but there's little doubt as to what's going on.
