1989 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Arnold I HNHR 1 June 1830. Came by and checked the new hole in the Black Oak only to see an old baby peeking out at me. Yikes. Zipped down and got Stanback. We returned and banded the 4 babies here, returning them after dark. A close cell? 6 June 1300. The first thing to note here is that the above nest appears to have been LA2's, not Al's. We do not have this confirmed yet, but it seems likely based on my observations at LA2 yesterday and Stanback's observations. In any case, I'm here to watch for a git. 1305. ①♀ P.DG/LP-Da #1004. ②♀ B8-Yc(N)/M #1212 subordinate to ♀1004. ③♀ M #1631 1330. ④♂ LG/wn #1026. ⑤♀ R-B1K/M #1493. ⑥♂ M/or- #1562. 1345. ♀1004 just peeked two shit out of ♀1212 & ♀1631. 1400. ⑦♂ R8-Yc1/Re6 #(1340). ⑧♂ Ds/DB #1027 1430. Quitting for now. Note that: ①Most of the birds are here, ②the babies well banded on the 1st are not here; certainly they belong to LA2 after all ③no nest is obvious, although I saw some odd flights which could have been related to a nest. 26 June 1530. Climbed and checked the granany tree hole here, which is in good shape but empty. Birds have been in hole a bunch lately; I think they're just egg-tossing (and, with 4♀, may never stop). 2 August 1030. Lots of stored acorns remaining here.
