Melanerpes formicivorus
Black Oak

23 April
1545. Saw 8 R-W/W-R #1006 sitting at the hole in the Black Oak up
toward Bianca.
2 August
900. There are acorns remaining in The granary here.
As for capacity, my guess is that it's probably down some
from the old days, since The horizontal limb in The central
area which used to hold so many has long since fallen.
This may have been made up in part by new holes, but I
doubt it's been replaced entirely.

18 January
1615. Counted stores: Central area: 1462
Site area: tree 1: 1356
(with roost hole) → " " tree 2: 940
As the central area storage limbs continue to deteriorate, the birds
have begun to go whole-hog into drilling holes in the 2 main
side area trees. In particular, virtually all the holes in this
area used to be in dead limbs, but in both trees they have begun to
seriously drill holes in the bark of the major limbs. This area
is well on its way to being a major storage facility. In any case,
everything is fairly full, and I'd put current capacity at
around 4000. (Note that I certainly missed these new limbs
when I looked around last August (above).
2 April
1115. Lots of stores; no birds in any holes.
13 April
1500. Birds flushing from everywhere when I arrived here; 8 in the
knot hole in the PO tree.
1505. 8 still looking out of the hole.
15 April
1550. No one anywhere here this time.
