1989 1990 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill West HNHR (21 May) I doubt this is really the critical factor, but. These birds don't have any acorns left in the granary. (I don't think they had any several weeks ago either, however, and can't understand why they would fail now.) 24 May Jane really did see #1374 & 1389 in February, so my best guess is: #1374 & 1389. Last seen 16 Feb., (by Jane), gone by 15 April (about the time the nest started). Dis. abt. 15 March ± 1mo. My best guess is that the NOBA # (5330, seen by Jane on 27 Jan.) never really belonged here. 16 June 1415. No sign of any activity here in any of the holes. 1990 10 January 1310. There are some old shells here, but no intact stored acorns. My guess is that this group is gone, at least for the winter. 12 April 805. Looks & sounds pretty deserted up here. 815. Well, over on the far West side was a ♂ kanitting who flushed down when I came upon him. Could be a wanderer, or maybe there are birds here after all. 30 April 1115.! ♀M, ? flushed from last year's nest hole! Checked it: hole empty, but in fairly good shape. Guess. There's a group here after all! 23 May 1700. Bird in hole here! Checked it: 3 fresh eggs! 29 May 1710. Still 3 eggs. Bird in hole. 4 June 1345. 2 babies, ~3 to. Left Skip to watch. 5 June Skip saw ♂1608 (from 1500) and a ♀: "Red/DBlue". There are a couple of candidates for her but we'll need another
