1989 1990 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill "B"C" HUNTER 19 May 1700. Opened the nest here which I discovered yesterday thinking this was School Hill. They have 4 babies, not so young - eyes are open and feathers are developing - I'd say ~13 days old. That makes the est. LED 25 April. These birds have some acorns stored in the nest tree. Tomorrow I'll watch to see who's here. 30 May 825. Set up to ambush at the nest; watching. 940. Caught an u68, 1st bird to feed. Now 81698 1100. ♀ came: 9 R-w(wn)/M B1K-w(wn)/LB 1677. 1105. Quitting. Will watch again tomorrow to make sure there's only a pair here. 21 May 1430. Took blood and put FWS bands on the 4 babies here, who are now #1705-1708. I should finish banding them on or about 28 May. 28 May 1600. Banded and remeasured the 4 babies, all of whom are just peachy. 10 June 800. No signs from the nest, as expected. There are a few acorns left in the small limb in the next tree, so they do still have stores. Is this their whole granary? 1990 10 January 1230. There are no stores here, either in the next tree or a tree just up the hill, where there are ~100 holes in one limb. My guess is that the group here is now defunct. 12 April 740. Nothing here in passing. 18 June *Group update* 81698. Last seen 28 Sept, no sign since Jan, at least -> D.A. 19 Nov 6 wks Group is currently defunct, as far as we can tell.
