1990 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill HNHR (28 April) 850.! ?♀/m #260!!? Holy cow! Don't tell me she's been resurrected? It even looks like she may be being guarded! How does this sort of thing happen? 915.♂Da/m#1388.♂Geo/Da-or#1620.♀DB/Wt#260. She's here alright. My goodness. If I hadn't been up here 10 days ago I don't think I'd have any suspicion of anything suspicious happening at all. So where was she when all those new ♀♀ were up here? And how did she regain her place? Very strange indeed; I was quite sure she had bit the dust. 30 April) 1145. Quiet here in passing; none in any of the known holes. 4 June 1400. Still no sign of a nest, but lots of stored acorns remaining. 18 June Note that Mike reports a tentative revival of "Sch Hill "B"" here, up around the saddle (not on the "SHC" side). No sign of nests in either place, however! 15 July The bad news is that it appears we missed a nest here: Skip saw a jNOBA here today along with lots of begging & apparent feeding of fledglings. Shit. I set an ambush at the Blue Oak hole: zilch. But we did get some roosting elsewhere so we'll try again tomorrow. 16 July Lots of power struggle activity here today, making the entire situation quite confusing (are the babies maybe from elsewhere, having followed adults in their group to the power struggle?) 17 July An ambush this morning in the forest hole yield 2 of the ♂♂ and an unbanded baby (now j1899). This makes it more likely, although by no means certain, that I did miss a nest here 510. 2 nests up. Skip keeping an eye on them.
