Melanerpes formicivorus
Road Warrior
HNHR
27 March Saw 3 birds here this evening; 2 (at least) roosted in
the hole down near Road 1. Ambush?
30 March Set ambush tonight, but string broke.
16 May 1700. Opened the hole in the Valley Oak in the creek by the
granary where I saw a bird 2 days ago. Hole is in excellent
shape, but currently empty.
31 May Still no sign of a nest here. Also, it would appear that
they are out of acorns.
This evening, all 3 birds (almost certainly The Whole
group) roosted in the hole I opened back on the 16th.
2 June 2145. Tonight I ambushed the hole, nabbing all 3 birds.
They turned out, much to my surprise, to be 881557 and
1558 - The 2 babies from last year - plus 91552, an
immigrant from Wolfpack (1st yr bird).
* Hence: the old breeding 8 1452 and the 9 NOBA are
both gone, replaced by these birds. Since 91552
apparently moved early (she was last seen in June
of 1988) I'll have all this happening, more
or less arbitrarily, on 0 Sept ± 3 months.

17 January 1430. Checked the granary here and found no stored acorns. Looks
bad for this group, unfortunately.
29 March 1540. Watched here for 80 min or so; no sign of birds.
5 April 8 1558 seen at Wake power struggle; see notes.
16 June 1500. A 9 in the granary area; Maybe a group here after all?
26 September 1640. No sign of life here. Granary empty.
