1989 1990 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes fomiticivorus Westgate HNHR 28 March An antbush (530) at last year's nest hole (dead hole high in the sycamore) yielded 2 first-year birds: ♂1585 and ♀1664. However, they're also using the other hole for roosting, so I can try there next time. 27 April 1620. Checked hole here: Eggs, freshish. 12 May 1750. Checked hole: 4 babies, ~6 do, +2 unhatched eggs. ELED ≈ 25 April. 15 May 1530. Set up to try and catch the ub♀. 1608. ♂BIL-BL/BL ♀1664. 1720. ♂? ♂ #1663(?). Birds don't seem to be freaked out by the setup, but feeding is still real slow. 1724. In tree: ♂♂ yel-Bm/wn #1313 and ♀♀ Red/1B #1571. 1730. Quitting for now. 17 May 930. Set up again. 940. ♂M/BIL-WN(w) #1106 in the tree. 1000. Got her! Now ♀1688. 28 May 1700. Banded The 4 babies here as # 1990 10 January 1345. Counted stores: 1560. There are a good number of reason- able limbs full of acorns here. I'd put capacity at ~2000. 4 April 1855. 2 birds appear to have roosted in The nest hole (in The road sycamore) here tonight. 5 April 755. At least 8 birds here and lots of chasing.
