1996 Waltin D. Koenig Melanerpes fomiticivorus Lower PHF HNHR 28 May 1630. Discovered this third nest (=group, presumably) here in the lower patch of trees nearest the road. They have young babies in a strange hole I'll have to try and open tomorrow. Who lives here? Beats me. Everyone else we knew of here was is feeding at one or the other (or both -5/17/13?) of the 2 other active nests here. 29 May 1210. Took awhile, but I eventually got into the hole here, where there are 3 babies ~8 do + 1 unhatched (but developed) egg. 3 June There are stores remaining here. Set up to catch birds, who as far as we know are all NOBAs. 1600. Going for a bird. 1615. Got a ♂. Now #1862. 1633. Back for another ½ hr. A ♀ next? 1705. Got a ♀! Now #1863. All for now! 6 June 1520. Back to watch and catch, in case there are more NOBAs here. 1545. 81862 came but was freaked and didn't feed. 1548. This time he fed. 1650. 81862's fed several times. ♀1863 just fed for the 1st time. 1715. None besides these 2, who I suspect are it here. But we'll do a real watch or 2 here to be sure. Leaving for now. 8 June Steve watched here also; so far none but this pair seem to be here. 13 June 1415. Banded & bled the 2 babies here.
