1996 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Upper PHF HNHE (16 May) Steve, by the way, saw #1713 feed here and "♂ Grn-Red/wh"; no telling who this might be. Plus he saw an unbanded ♂ here too, I think. So in any case #1713 shouldn't be the only male in town here. 1610. Finally a 2nd ♂! But I didn't get much of a look at his bands. #1713 coming again as before. 1645. Have to quit. A night ambush might be illuminating. 1700. All 4 babies look just fine! Moved the blind to the other side of the nest. 17 May 1435. One more time, this time from the other side of the hole. 1520. Caught an unbanded ♂! Now #1808. 1540. Back watching some more. 1650. None returned. Quitting. (Band fairly dt) 1654. Well, stayed after all: ♂ yel-Or/M (or ca-Or/M?) Seen well. Definitely not on the list. #1713 here also, of course. 1700. Still no sign of a ♀. 18 May My guess for at least the 3rd ♂ here is #1647: DBlue/Red; a baby from 1988; this would further strengthen the inference that this is a "BAND" group that's "budded" from lower PHF. This bird definitely is consistent with what I've seen here (including a brief look at some faded bands on the R leg). Steve's bird could be yet a 4th bird, or, more likely, a hallucination. 21 May Watched here at length yesterday and again this morning, finally nailing down the group composition. First, the ♂ is unbanded, and unfortunately feeds very
