J.D.Straney 1978 120 8 Aug, contd. > San José. Dinner at a "Pollo Frito Kentucky" and stumbled into the Hotel Bella Vista (Ave. , Calle ) run by an English-speaking black man. Nice place ($40 + $10/car park) but somewhat noisy. Talked & to bed by 12. 9 Aug. San José to Villa Mills, Prov. San José up (unavoidably) early. Drove out the Pan Am to Villa Mills on Cerró de la Muerta (time ~2 hrs.), the road past Cartago quickly climbs into the Talamanca high areas quite scenic but grazed. Past Empolme one starts to pick up little bits of habitat (the one Jim Hanken mentioned at Empolme seems no longer there). At Villa Mills (= Restaurante "La Georgia") the road begins its descent & this part has much more good habitat than to the N, but tends to steepness. We ate at the Rest. and arranged for a room ($30). Then went 2 km down the road (5) to where a gravel road goes off to W (this later rejoins Pan Am further down the d. About 0.2km up this,
