D. Stanney 1977 79. 1 July, cont'd. towns are more numerous but there is some reasonable hotel at near 190. Drove W on 190 to Arriaga turnoff then down to 200. The rd to Arriaga descends the front range steeply thru exquisite but inaccessible forest w/m sight of the pacific finally reaching the mildly lush coastal plain. 200 runs along this plain which is heavily disturbed except for one patch 30km NW Hixutha. Into Tapachula by dark & a room at the Swank Motel Kenico as we have only traveler's checks left & the cheapys won't take them. John rd. drove Rt. 16 and found one Micrurus and a large coral snake mimic Lampropeltis DOR. Bed day 12. 1 Aug. Tapachula, this. vicinity Up at 8 & in to town to change money & post mail, then breunch in a chinese cafe' (many of these here) and on to the Guatemalan embassy to get our visas. The consul told us a xerox of the Mexican car permit would do in Guatemala, so got one of those. Decided not to try crossing the boarder today So went out Rt. 16 to hunt. This road winds up from a river valley into coffee plantations. Pocked around
