O. Straney 1977 74. 23 July, cont'd wet site then back to our pullout to finish processing. Finally left at 4:30 PM driving S to La Ventosa Jet for gas then E on 190. The acacia scrub & wind persisted for some miles, finally getting more mesic as we climbed slightly out of the plain. At the jet of 190 & the rd to Tapachula (200) began climbing into hills with feng forest. Pines ~ 850m. after passing into Chiapas, then down slightly into a broad plain of rolling, grassy hills. This, with cuts at intervals, persisted to Tuxtla Gutierrez where we got a sleazy motel (Paraiso) just W of town ~9:30. Wrote up field notes and then to bed. 24 July Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas Vicinity Up at 7:30 then off thru Chiapa de las Casas where we had a 9 AM breakfast at the hotel. Just the other side of town the rd begins the climb up the cuts to San Cristobal and along here we took Rte 195 towards Tistebe Villebrosa. This rd winds thru fairly flat land for a while passing several promising streams and a few small towns, then climbs thru scrubby forest finally getting into pines. On the N slope is very lush tropical forest w/ tree ferns on a very steep slope. We stopped at several
