D.O.Straney 1977 20 July, cont'd Oaxaqueten which on the map is on the main channel of the river, a straight shot to the hills the salamanders are known from. The road is ~ 40 mi to the river, very rutted, passing thru rolling hills of cows until reaching the [illegible] river plain where much standing water is. Many grounddoves & smooth bulled orio! The last 100 yds to the river were very muddy & we chopped grass for traction. When we got to the river we discovered that the "town" was on the other side (as was the ferry) and that same consisted of 2-3 buildings. Decided not to try to rent the one boat apparent for the trip upriver. Frustrated, we made the return drive reaching 185 ~ 5 PM. Drove back to the Hotel, getting a room & dinner, then out to road drive. The most productive area was ~ 30 mi N Matias Romero, yielding a Celia & Bolitoglossa among other frogs and snakes. Returned to motel ~ midnight for sleep. Matias Romero, Oax vicinity 21 July up late and processed animals until nearly noon, then a late brunch. Went
