D. Straney 1977 July, cont'd. So returned to 120 & continued to Teluantepec. The city is approached from a pass on the mts across a wide plain of acacia trees & cactus that is more cultivated than in the mts. On the W side of the city the acacia disappears & is replaced by tilled land on a very wide & windy plain ~ 20m. above sea level. The turnoff to Matras Romero climbs into the hills to ~300m. The hillside have nice forest w/ cactus, giving way on top to tilled & grazed land w/ many ponds. ~1hr before dark saw bats flying although a large herd of prey (vulture?) was seen flying at the same time. At the top of the hill many bats seen flocking high feeding. Got to Hotel Juan Luis ~ 8th for a room $130. Good dinner & shower then 1hr each washing clothes. Told by 12. 20 July Matras Romero, Ex. vicinity up ~8 & packed up drying clothes and, after breakfast, headed out to Sucilapa, Ver. about 40mi N to see about getting up the Rio Chalupa to a salamander area. The town is a fairly thriving riverfront in the Carrecan lowlands - much pastureland & cattle. Could not go any further from here, so went ~20mi N to a road to
