D. Straney 1977 69. July, contd. dry. Back ~2 mi we walked down along a ridge rocky w/ limestone. Several very shallow caves - out of one flew 2 bats but could not find more. This till 5 PM when a thunder shower moved in (very impressive to see it move up the valleys) then down to Sola de Vega ~6 writing notes. Began raining about then down there. Dinner at same Eatery - this is apparently the "truck-stop" in town & no doubt is the best - this says little. Then back up to walk limestone & roadcut in dark, finding only a leptodactylid in former. Back down rd ~2 mi S of S.de V. at wide pullout to set up tent. To bed ~ 11:30. No nets set. River in town might be good - but Liz. July Urban Sola de Vega, Oax. to Matias Romero, Oax. Up at 8, packing car, then drove to Oaxaca to cash checks, etc. This done by 12:30. Then on to Tehuantepec stopping before Mitla for lunch and at Mitla turnoff for gas. The road passes thru very mountainous areas that are very dry w/ cactus. This eventually gives way further south to nice acacia scrub. At La Reforma tried to get up into mts above Sta. Maria Endepe to find thornius for J. Hanking but 6 mi down the dirt rd to there (1.2 mi N of town) came to stream ford that John's car couldn't cross.
