Orizaba, Ver. to Coatlapan, Ver.
10 July
Up early at 7 to re-pack the car. Then drove
to Coatlapan to find Sr. Carlos Ceron, a man
who has helped many herpetologists. The area around
the town is mostly planted to bananas & fruits
but a fair amount of native vegetation remains in
this steep, hilly country. Sr. Ceron was away for the
morning so a boy named Daniel took us out for 2 hrs
to peel [illegible] bananas for salamanders & frogs.
Found ~4 small Bolitoglossa and a Smilisca this
way. Back after noon & met Sr. Ceron, a quaint friendly
gentleman who talked with us while watching Mexico
lose at soccer. Many herpetologists have used his help,
some of whom we also know - he began w/ Edward
Taylor 36 yrs ago. Late in the afternoon he took us
out (w/ 2 nephews) to a lush banana area and
we found 4 more Bolitoglossa, Smilisca & 2 Anotheca.
Returned to town & were introduced to his younger brother,
Miguel who, with his wife, visited various folks in
California 2 yrs ago. Very pleasant chat, then he
offered us the floor of his unfurnished new house
to sleep & work on & they proceeded to clean it up
for us. Then Miguel informed us we would eat with
him that PM. So waited for that - past dark.
A magnificent meal - for the 2 of us only - but frustrating
as I had planned to set a net at dusk outside
a cave below 150 that we had looked in earlier
& saw 2 small phyllotomates in. Instead, ~1hr
