Puella Pobl. to Banderilla, Vex.
7 July
Up late ~9:30, breakfast at the restaurant of
the Zaragoza motel, then on down tolled. Took
Rte. 140 to Jalapa and wound around
plateau with mtn peaks in clouds. Several rain
showers - overcast. Interesting rain shadow
effect near peak of plateau. Stopped at Las Vegas
to turn stones, finding Toluca & Sceloporus. Then
back 2.3 mi W of town (actually this village is
W of turnoff for 140 to town or Wend) to find
pine forests w/ bunch grass (scattered) & thick duff.
Right on rd shoulder turned big log & caught
a Microtus [illegible] mexicanus (?). In woods
proper got 2 sp. Pseudorycea & 1 thorius
plus a lizard too. Then on down rd (~2:30)
to La Joya for lunch of TB & T on side of rd then
back thru town past last house. Volcanic boulder
all over in oak/pine/bromeliad/grassy area. Turned
stones getting many snakes: Thamnophis, Geophis,
Tantilla, Toluca, plus lizards (Emyces, Sceloporus).
Peeled many (up to 100?) bromeliads finding ~11
Chiroptera triton larvae. Quit ~6 PM but could not
get bromeliad cutter apart - spend some time on this,
finally tied it to car. Drove to Banderilla & out
rd. to Misatla , looking for net sights & crissable.
Looked in old road tract thru mtn. - bats there but
few. Getting dark fast, but nothing good for
nets. Back to Banderilla ~7:15 to find motel
