O. Straney 1977 54. 5 July Tamaulipale SLP to Toluca, Mex. Up at 7:45 & into town for breakfast. Went out San Martin Rd to call bromeliads but found nothing in them. Left on 85 to Mexico city ~10, climbing thru the sierra. Surprising how much of this land is cultivated - virtually no undisturbed habitat below the pine forests. Very little traffic in mts. Stopped once to peel bromeliads but nothing except irritating sap. Stopped w/ (5?) of Durango, Hgo. to look for salamanders in pine woods but too dry - John got a Hyla & two lizards here. Stopped further down the rd. at level pine/oak woodlands & John found a Pseudacrycex lelli under 1st pile of leaf/litter. Much looking in moist places found nothing else. Many limestone sink holes here - which is probably where they are. Lunch ~ 2:30 of PB & T sandwiches then on down rd. Dropped onto plateau passing thru Chihuahua Thorn scrub and some dreadful habitat. Approached Mexico ~ 6PM, getting an undeserved fine for running red light as entered city. Traffic terrrible. Dinner at KFC on 15 as we drove to Toluca for night. MUCH hassle finding a hotel here - drove around much until spotted Terminal Hotel which is cheap. Much needed rest before (10PM) going for permits tomorrow. No collecting tonight.
