D.O. Shaney 1977 40 27 March Rather disappointing, especially as there was much sign of Diplo? duggings in all areas. Have gone off to the Fresno area for tonight. Out 49 to 140 to 99 stopping for lunch at MacDonalds in Madera. Then on to Fresno and out 180 towards Kiny Canyon. The slopes here are more dense than around Yosemite and we saw only a small band of poor chaparral going up - between grazed oak land and pines. Snow above 5000'. Came back down 245, a steep road, and saw good chaparral, but all fenced and posted. Followed 245 to near Woodlake and decided to let tonight go and move down to # near Bakersfield. Followed the signs to Visalia, seeing one dead Pituophius on the road 4.0 mi N Junct. 201 $245 in Elderwood. Then 99 to Bakersfield for dinner and out 178 towards Lake Isabella. Camped ~1500' along the Kern River at the only low campsite open in winter. To bed by 11 PM. 28 March Up at 7:30 PM. 178 is a busy road most of the nite, and some people pulled in to campground after ~5 AM. Breakfast and a forage in the river where found Gambusia, Heliooma and what looks like Corlicula. Many Beechi's ground squirrels cavorting in the rocks. Drove N of Lake Isabella to Kernville, then took Sierra way N to Roads End and points N looking for halutut. Decided to set as
