D.O. Straney 1975 32. 25 Nov Cond. Left the San Gabriels ~ 12 noon, then drove the unbelievably long distance (~1 ½ hrs.) to Lytle Canyon, [San Bernardino] # San Gabriel Mts., San Bernardino Co., Calif. This looked better on the map. The canyon is steep and narrow, bordering a large wash, but is crawling with RV's and (worse) hunters. Set 90 traps 14.3 mi N of Fontana P.O. (by rd.) to the sounds of gunshots a few hundred yds. up the canyon. The chaparral here is fairly dense. Left there, then on to # [the San] Bernardino Mts. on Rt 38. Set 30 small 5/19 traps in Yellow Pine/juniper grass at ~ 5000' for Parognathus alticola 12.1 mi E Mentone P.O. (by rd.), then track down the canyon to a spot 11.6 mi E Mentone P.O. (by rd.) and set 60 traps in almost pure chemise. Finally, 94 traps set 6.8 mi E Mentone P.O. (by rd.) in Artemisia chaparral on the river flats across the rd. from the Mill Creek Ranger Station. By then it was dark, so off to the Mill Creek Campgrd. for dinner and bed (by 8:30). It started out to be a warmer site than last, but as the clouds receded, it chilled quickly.
