D.O. Straney 1976 19. decided to go back to Memphis. The spare was not in good shape and neither was the other rear tire so we drove at 40 mph all the way back. Very frustrating last day of collecting. 20 Aug. This AM went to Sears and got two new tires ($130+). The car rides much better now that all the tires are new, in alignment and balanced, but part of this is psychological. Last into on the way to the river the car was shaking badly and we now attribute this to the tire that blew. Left Memphis at 12:15 PM. In Arkansas, was surprised to see that the Mississippi floodplain is almost 45 mi wide. In Missouri between Hannibal and Alton it is only 7. Took a 2 1/2 hr detour through the Ozarks which was very interesting but a little long. We are taking I-40 west. 22 Aug. Arrived in Berkeley this AM at 3:45- a 41.5 hr. drive. No problems. Very nice to be home.
