Melanerpes formicivorus
Road Warrior HNHR
13 May 1830. Spurred on by, gosh, I don't know what, I watched
here yesterday, finding several nice holes. Later, at
tusk, ≥2 birds roosted in one of them (conspicuously on
the hill overlooking the gravany area, where there are
stores remaining). This evening I opened it (it's a
snag) and found 2 babies, eyes open, bushy-tailed,
and ~15 days old. So no ambush, but it would be
appropriate to catch some birds feeding at this long-
neglected group.
14 May 1615. Set up to catch someone at the nest.
1200. No sign of a soul. Giving up for now.
1745. Tried again for an hour. Still nothing (but the
babies are there!).
15 May 715. And again-
800. Checked the babies - They're fine!
915. Well, I sure don't understand it, but they've outlasted me
again. Maybe I can try again in a couple of days.
945. ! Woke up to discover a feeding trip by an adult! But
she didn't go all the way into the hole.
19 May 415. Ambush to get birds roosting failed, but I went
ahead and banded the 2 babies as #1557-1558.
25 May 400. Finally succeeded in nabbing the bird on the nest, who
turned out to be my old favorite #1452, the bird I
cought up near here on 15 January. Babies are still fine.
