1988 Walther D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 1 HNHR 15 January 730. After a good rain last night most of our ambushes didn't work, but we did catch 1 ub 8", now #1452, up in the low hole high in the forest back behind (& above) The Black Oak nest tree (where birds also roosted). *Group update* Two new ub 9" and 2 ub 8" (1 now 81452), somewhere between now definitely here - did we miss a nest? I guess so (81452 certainly could have been a 1st yr bird). I will assume they all emerged (fledged) on 1 Oct. 1987? Well, Mark saw ub birds here in August, and there was some serious confusion here near the end of August. It looks like that a late spring nest (~15 July, say) was missed (see his 18 Aug notes) but it doesn't really seem like all were babies; in fact, there is no Breeder 8" here! So, we'll have to make up a compromise: 2 babies, now both 9", plus 2 new males, moved here ~15 Aug. 30 January 1500. Caught 8" 1452 again in the same hole (after opening it - he wouldn't come out this time). I didn't do anything to him except replace the M band, which was the wrong size. Upon release, he flew down to Road Warrior - perhaps he belongs there and not R1? 1 March *Group Update* 81452. Not a R1 bird. A San Sebastian bird. 4 March Ambush new holes in Sycamore and in a Valley Oak on the flats. Caught an ub 9" (now 1464) in the latter, 8804 and an ub 8" (now 1465) in the former.
