1988 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Prairie Home Field H NHR 23 April Found a hole in a big Nelly Oak fairly far up the draw with youngish babies. Hole needs to be opened, but can be climbed to pretty easily. 1 May 1345. Opened the nest (Which is an ant tree, but not a bad one), finding 4 babies, at least 20-22 days old - they're ready to band! 4 May 1700. Banded the 4 babies, who are well over 20 days old, big and healthy! (#1505-1508). These birds have lots of stored acorns remaining, by the way. 12 June 1030. Walked up here for the 1st time since May finding a bird in the hole along with 3 hatchlings and 2 opaque, unhatched eegs. So, hatching date is today, clutch size was 5, and the FED was ~29 May. They should be banded on or about 3 July.
