1986 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 1500 H N H R 18 January *Group Update* J101. last seen by Missy on 7 July, gone by 25 Sept. (Katy) → D.A. 16 Aug ± 1 month. 6 February 1400. Counted stores: Main tree: 1948 ? 2° tree : 171 The granaries are not especially full; I'd set the maximum number of holes here to at least 3000. 10 April 1030. Climbed to the hole in the main tree where birds have been seen. No eggs yet, but the hole looks ready. 17 April 1300. Bird in hole again: opened, 2 eggs, fresh. I marked them #1 & 2. 20 April *Group Update* J109. last seen 26 Sept (Katy), gone by 28 Sept, → D.A. 27 Sept. 1985. (In fact, Katy appears to have seen this bird up on School Hill on 27 Sept.). 23 April 1000. Checked the hole: 4 eggs (Susan checked). 30 April 1045. Checked the hole: 3 eggs pipping (1 shows egg-tooth already) while 1 egg doesn't seem to have developed. Thus: today is hatching day 0. 12 June 1230. A "todo" here. Watching. Six+ birds were here chasing a few minutes ago. Seems like lots of [illegible]... There are acorns left here in the granary. 1300. [illegible] #297 here; looks like with ≥ 2 ub [illegible]. There are definitely * at least 2 ub [illegible]. 1300. 1 of the babies around: juno/#1275. @j Still some chasing. Looks clear: #601 is gone; 2 new [illegible] here, needing to be caught: #1100 not here also.
