Melanerpes fomiticivorus
Chongo
(13 June) #1265. Possibly here all along; became a breeder
When #872 was replaced by #899 in March 1987
He also may have left and then returned when he could inherit.
1900. After finding a hole in a dead live oak that had 4+
birds in it last evening about roosting time, I returned
planning an ambush, only to be foiled by the existence
of a nest - presumably their 2nd (they still have lots of
acorns here). It had 4 babies ~5 days old + 1 unhatched
egg, small but developed (possibly died pipping).
Thus, the apparent clutch size for the 2nd nest here
is 5. Now watching roosting.
#2000. At least 3 fledglings here for sure; may be roosting in
a tree up above the granary.
18 June 1215. Watching nest; set up for ambush.
1315. Got an ub ♀! Now #1606. Bird is molting!
1330. Leaving. 1 a day is probably a good pace.
19 June 1600. Back for a 2nd round.
1700. Giving up for now. (ub ♀ came, but I missed here)
1315. Back again.
1400. Got her! Now #1607. Put back in the hole....
22 June 1130. Babies still here and alive and screaming!
26 June 1400. Banded the 2 remaining babies here; not very old yet!
Now #1617-1618. This Live Oak where the nest is is an ant
tree, by the way. Not a particularly bad one, but one nonetheless.
