1987 Walker D Coenig Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill West HNTIR 17 January Group update I think the former birds abandoned this g territory late last winter (eg. March '86). None were seen again except for 9975, who was seen at the Lambert power struggle on 28 Feb '86. So 9ub, 6530, 9975, ?974, & ?1041 all abandoned March ± 1 month. (Note that they had acorns here on 9 Feb.) 11 May 1845. Nest here is in a huge knothole; 6 babies have hatched recently. 14 May 1000. Finally sawed open the hole: 3 babies, eyes just opening (≈9 do). Band on ~28 May. 16 May 800. Watching nest; ambush set up. 900. 8 banked (?); 9ub tried and missed her. 1030. Well, that was my big chance for the day, leaving. 22 May 1310. Still 3 babies; watching again. 1415.(1)♀ Maure/Lanen ♂Metal/Maure-?! feets. (R leg certain, L leg boy H) ②♂ Yellow/M ③♂ Or/M I don't think this is the same as 8#2. ④♂ Maure/M ! ⑤♀ub! Caught her! #1389. ① is 91374. 23 May 1050. Watching (left side of hole). 1120. 969 here, chased away by someone. And again, chased off by 91389. 1140.♂ 8or / 8m-DBaw Maybes 8#1-or/WD-DBaw but I doubt it. 1240. Don't ask me where they're getting them, but the birds are definitely feeding acorns here (last 3 feedings by 91389/91374)
