Melanerpes formicivorus
Lower Haystack
(6 May) ③? Or/wh/M #1155. ④? Hr/Mh-D4# (D46 ; ⑤? Red/Red #1266 from
Gazebo [♀]
1130. My guess at this point is that these 4 birds are it, and
that there's only 1 ♀ (!)
1200. Still no sign of a 2nd ♀. Leaving for now.
7 May
800. Ian reports no activity at the hole this morning, and
indeed, egg #1 is still the only egg there.
8 May
945. 2 eggs in hole. Ian reports that, as I suspected
from my watch on 6 May, there are only 4 birds here,
and that ♀1266 is the breeding ♀.
9 May
1715. Still (the same) 2 eggs in the hole.
10 May
1400. " " " " " Have they gone
to another hole? or what's the deal then?
11 May
700. Watched here a bit, after checking holes. The 4
birds are still pretty tight here, but are not (obviously)
going to any holes. ♀1266 seen; also 3 ♂♂, though I
didn't see their bands. ♀1266 still drumming SOME (!)
730. Still 2 eggs in the hole. Given that the birds show no sign
of incubation, I'd have to guess that they've abandoned
this nest.
3 June *Group Update*
♀524. Presumably gone just before the power struggle
here on 30 March.
♂1046 and ♂1146 now breeders, inherited 30 March.
♀1266 and ♀1267 from Gazebo moved here (maybe
not ♀1267), ♀1267 not seen (so far) after the PS.
