1987 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Hay-Blom HNHR 17 January Group Update: J1299, 1300. NSAB. J1302, 1304, 1305. All NSAB (!) 25 March 1100. Brought Cindy up here. 1 bird (81083) was sapsucking near the PO patch; at least 3 were way over by Far Tortuga flycatching. I left Cindy to watch and chased after the other birds, eventually seeing some down by the fence above (S) of Soto springs. ID't were (1) 8 LB/Bik-LB #571 and 2 89. Bands of 1 was 8PB/Red-Yel(n) ?? 11 April 2000. An ambush tonight at a new hole in the old nest tree (by the fence line) yielded 3 birds: 81303, 81085, and 8941. I weighed all 3, and, in lieu of catching 8571, took 81085 and kept him in the aviary for another temporary removal experiment. 2 April 1700. None in any holes. 81085 still in aviary, doing fine. 8 May 930. Bird in the old (deep) hole! 8 1500. Hole opened: 6 fresh eggs! One was, unfortunately, broken in the process of opening the hole, so there are 5 remaining. Incubation has just begun (there was a bird in the hole again when I came.) 10 May 1345. Hole checked: 1 new egg! So there are now 6 eggs again (a set size of 7, inc. the one I broke). Bird in hole. I'm now releasing 81085. 11 May 530. Watching. (Noone watched yesterday). No action here at all by 630, so I checked the hole: still 6 eggs. 640. Watching again.
