Balanosphyra formicivora
Hastings Reservation
(7 Aug) time sapsucking in the dense live oaks on either
side of Carmel Valley Rd. near the CV canyon
gate, which didn't help matters very much either.
Good census, however: ♂837, ♀1042, ♂1081,
♂1079, ♀1284, ♂1285 all seen well, plus 4
surviving juveniles: 1430, 1432, 1433, 1434. No
sign of ♂943, ♀1040, J1431. I suspect that all are gone
10 0930-1030 at Y and the Blomquist Knoll,
a mini power-struggle in progress: Two ♂
from Hay-Blom, ♂1301 (P.k.-Red/or a-d ♂1303
BP.k.-wht(N)/wht
"" setting up shop on the knoll with
♀1350 of Y (D6m-BP.k.(N)/mauve-D6m). These 3 birds
walked together frequently, while exploring the old
fallen knoll granary and the roost hole in the
Blue Oak. This same sort of thing happened in fall
of 1981 (see Knoll Set notes + T notes)
At Y proper (in locusts by lower barn) were
♀675 (m-wht/M, D6m
♂1150 Red-B1k/M, a-d J1428
M/mauve
DBlue-wht(N))
(All 3 took dog food from the
feeder). No sign of ♂1376, who is probably gone.
J1428 also "visited" the Knoll birds briefly, but
appeared to be chased by the Hay-Blom ♂.
