1986 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus SOBO HNHR 22 February 1445. Counted stores: Main tree: 968 Other: 45 1213. Not bad. I'd put capacity at 1200. 11 April 1020. At least 2 birds were around last year's nest hole, so I went up and opened it, finding some moss and the makings of a mouse nest (but no mouse). I cleared it out, and with luck maybe they'll still use it. 17 April 1700. Looks like I'm in luck - there's a bird in the hole now. These birds also have stores remaining. 22 April ○ 1039 intruding at LA2. See LA2 notes. 1330. None in the hole (last year's nest): it's empty (but is in good shape now). 7 May 1415. Watching for a nest. ○♂ Red #736 here. 1450. Now 2 ○♂, second ○♂ /m #1039. 1545. Found the hole - it's in the same tree as last year, but in the hole above the opened one! They have babies ≥ 14 days old; should be opened soon. 8 May 1100. 4 Babies in the nest, ~14-15 days old. 15 May 1300. When I was up here before an ominous crack opened up in the limb, which I nailed up, but, as it turns out, futilely. The entire limb fell, taking the babies and both nest holes with it. A double tragedy! 16 June 1600. Watching. 1630 ○♂ or -? /m #1037. ○♂ -bp/red #1039. ○♂ m/b-w(m) #736 1645. ♀ here also, but haven't seen her legs yet. 1655. Going to look for a nest. 16 September 845. Watching. Lots of new acorns here now.
