1982 1983 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Black Oak Hastings Reservation 20 June 1430. Braved the Poison Oak to check the 2nd nest here, which has 2 babies ~6-8 dys old (eyes not open yet, no feathers) along with 2 unhatched eggs (1 fertile, the other apparently not). 3 November 1515. ①♀ yee/31k-Red #713 here. As expected, these birds are loaded with acorns, but I'm too tired to count them now. 11 November 1130. Did my best to count stores here: Central area { Old Black Oak Nest tree: 105 VO granary: 1895 Fallen Black Oak: ~1900* } Side area: 914 *This tree is rather older and has more furrows than previously and is now almost impossible to count with any precision, as many crevices are literally crammed with acorns. I counted 950 without climbing up it and suspect that doubling this is a reasonable estimate. 1983 11 February The birds have lost most of the Fallen Black Oak here, along with perhaps ~1350 holes (and acorns!). 1340. Counted stores: VO Granary: 1768 Fallen Blk Oak: ~500 Side area: 340+ *Pretty much of a guess, but probably in the right vicinity. +They've also lost some limbs in the side area. °Many of the fallen acorns are still accessible on the ground, and the group probably has access to an additional 600-900 acorns. I took a sample of 50 from the downed limb.
