1982 1983 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. 11 November The granary at ARF is well filled with acorns; clearly there is still a group here. Meanwhile, 2 birds flushed from the granary at SBO; they have lots of acorns stored here also. 23 November Opened up the granary limbs at PUMP a bit by trimming some of the branches. Otherwise there's no action here, however, and the storage limbs continue a slow disintegration. 11 December A new group? There's an unbanded pair (♂, ♀) working in a dead (?) Blue Oak in the canyon near ARF, too: see map on back. Maybe these are ARF, too birds, but they are definitely hanging out here and could be distinct, although I didn't see any sign of stores or storage holes. 15 December (500. Here at PCHill #1 are lots of stores and several birds, some of whom are clearly intruding here at the lower end of the field. Seen are (bands rough, mind you): 1 ♂ Da-46L/Red-Yel 2 ♂ LB/Yel ♀ WH-LB/M 1983 30 March 1008. 2 Wickers over in the Valley Oaks ½ way to Blomore just got chased by the Lewis' Woodpecker out there. 9 April 845. Passed the new group at MarkRoberts Flat, flushing a ♂ with a M band on Lleft (♂ M ?). He was shy, though, and I wasn't able to pick up more. 855. Way on the other side of the creek the ♂ was just joined by an unbanded ♀. 930. There are apparently, 2 ♂'s (both banded) and a ♀ here. (all 3 together)
