1982 1983 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 1 Hastings Reservation 3 September While walking along the road this afternoon I came across 2 (!) roadkills from this group: ♂577 and ♀806 (just molting to a ♂). The former was fresh and not very near the latter, who was a day or 2 old. Bummer days for this group! 1 November 1145. ♂269 seen here while counting stores: Main tree: 1429 (this tree lost 1 large limb last year with at least 1000 holes) Sycamore: 1053 (this tree has accumulated at least 1000 holes in the past couple of years) Total: 2482 1983 10 January 1330. Counted stores: Main tree: 3040 Sycamore: 2275 5315. Took a sample of 50 acorns from the Main tree. 9 April 745. Watching the nest hole (no known activity as yet). 830. Climbed up and checked: no eggs; the hole looks like it's still being worked on. 17 April 615. Arrived. ♂ looking out of hole. Both ♂♀ there! One with distinct mustache leaves ~620. Other (w/o mustache) stays another 5 min, heaving out a billfall of sawdust at one point. After both are gone, I check hole - empty, lots of sawdust in cotton, some of which I take out. Back watching at 638. Getting close! 810. Leaving. None ever returned. (A House Wren was inside the hole for a few minutes, however.) 20 April 610. Watching nest - ♂ flushed from hole. (Ron had egg-tossing) yesterday.
