Melanerpes fornicivorus
Pipeline
Hastings Reservation
9 September
1800. While passing by here I noted 3 birds, inc. one
looking into the "hole" up in the top of the Sycamore
"granary". I didn't check to see if any acorns were
actually stored (it is still early) but finally, this
could be it for Pipeline!
29 September
1600. Watching from road. None in evidence here.
1620. I fear nothing is going on here. Rats.
22 October
There was a bird here in the granary just before dusk.
23 October
1345. There are even a few stored acorns here! Watching.
1405. Well, things are slow nonetheless. Going to see how
many acorns there are. The answer is: ~10. At least
somebody's thinking about it.
1 November
1120. They have 75 stored acorns here now. Saw [illegible]
here up in the granary. Success at last! (Ron was
identified the group here.)

10 January
1230. Counted stores: 850. Just about everything here
is filled, and the birds have even made a few holes of their
own in the Sycamore. Not bad! I also took a sample
of 25 acorns from a small limb up in the tree.
9 April
1000. Bird in hole...
1730. Opened hole. Nothing yet.
10 April
720. Watching. None in vicinity.
830. Nothing happening, at least at the granary
6 June
1640. Climbed up and counted 550 acorns (!) They've made
a lot of their own holes up there! Probably 250+!
