1982 1983 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Gate HNHR November 1000. Only counted 175 acorns here, almost all in the one broken limb where the old nesthole is. (Last year the dead limb with the 4+ holes in it fell, along with ~200 holes.) 1020. Watching. (1) ♀ M / [illegible] light #789. 1035. (2) ♂ LP/DB/#627. (3) ♂ M/DB-WN(m) #626. 1045. (4) ♂ Red/Ble-wm #790 (still 8-type). (5) ♀ LB-At/LB #685. 1115. Leaving. 1983 10 January 1200. Counted stores: 1150. These birds are now at least in fair shape. Also took a sample of 25 acorns from the granary (all seemed to be Live Oak). 20 February 8790 intruding at R3. See R3 notes. 1 March This group lost the hanging limb in yesterday's storm, along with a large proportion of their stores and their 1980 nest hole. 15 March Susan and I ambushed this morning, nabbing all 8 birds from the '82 nest hole (!). The purpose was to remove #519, who was put in the aviary. 22 March 1725. ♀ LB-Red/LB #685 eating an acorn quietly here, she's clearly given up the battle next door at Westgate. See Susan's notes re #791, who was hurt in the White power struggle and recuperated inside Susan's sweater. 6 June 1615. Counted stores: 80. With the loss of the hanging limb this group has only ~200 or so natural holes remaining in their tree; most are available holes are now limbs we've put back up.
