1982 Walter D. Koenig 1983 Melanerpes formicivorus Corral Viejo Grande Hastings Reservation 14 June 1430. Watching. At least 3 ♂ and 1 ♀ here, all hawking insects and obviously feeding young somewhere, 1 ♂ is banded: ♂ LB/Bik-wrn#718; others not. (Bird could be Wn-Bik/ on Rleg). (This bird turns out to be ♂718, banded and recently breeding at Blow2, now apparently returned home.) 15 June There are definitely 5 adults in this group (I'm not sure what the sex of the 5th is.) I finally found their nest, up in a Valley Oak along the fence line toward Gazebo. They are feeding youngish babies. 1530. Opened the nest: 5 healthy babies, not quite ready to band but close. I measured and marked them. For nest hole characteristics, see back. There are, by the way, plenty of stored acorns left here in the granary. 19 June 930. Banded and measured the 5 babies, who are now #808 to 812. [illegible] 1983 21 March 1600. ♂ yel-red/m #717 seen here. Also ♂ B-wrn(w)/yel #836. And ♀ Bik/yel-red #838.
