Melanerpes formicivorus
Blontwo Hastings Reservation

1645. Here at Blontwo are several birds, including an ub ♀
and 6 M / Red #717 . There were most likely 1 or 2
other birds in the area as well. They seemed to be
flying off into the forest toward Gazebos.
1700. A ♀ (♀wn/M) just flew into the granary with
a green acorn (complete with cap and several leaves).
There are at least 3 adults here.
1730. There are now at least 2 birds in the top part of the
large canyon leading directly down to Corral Viejo (Dark
Hollow). At one point a ♀ was looking out of a wide
looking hole in a Valley Oak right by the gully.

Dark Hollow. Also, there was a banded ♂ at Blontwo on my
way out.

1105. This time there was a ♀ in the hole in the Gully Valley
Oak again! She flushed before I got there and I didn't hear
anything, so if they do have a nest at least the babies
haven't hatched yet.
20 September
800. None in the hole in the canyon, but there were birds
in the vicinity so I went up and opened the hole anyway
just to be sure. There was nothing in it, but the hole's in
pretty good shape and could be used soon at least.
27 September
1500. This time there was a ♀ in the hole and a 2nd bird
nearby, so I opened the hole, but, amazingly enough,
it's still empty...!?
29 September
900. A couple of birds are in the main area here.

Ron suggests that the Canyon area contains 2 ub birds, almost
