1982 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Blontwo Hastings Reservation 30 August 1645. Here at Blontwo are several birds, including an ub ♀ and 6 M / Red #717 . There were most likely 1 or 2 other birds in the area as well. They seemed to be flying off into the forest toward Gazebos. 1700. A ♀ (♀wn/M) just flew into the granary with a green acorn (complete with cap and several leaves). There are at least 3 adults here. 1730. There are now at least 2 birds in the top part of the large canyon leading directly down to Corral Viejo (Dark Hollow). At one point a ♀ was looking out of a wide looking hole in a Valley Oak right by the gully. 16 September 825. One again there's a bird in the Canyon leading down to Dark Hollow. Also, there was a banded ♂ at Blontwo on my way out. 19 September 1105. This time there was a ♀ in the hole in the Gully Valley Oak again! She flushed before I got there and I didn't hear anything, so if they do have a nest at least the babies haven't hatched yet. 20 September 800. None in the hole in the canyon, but there were birds in the vicinity so I went up and opened the hole anyway just to be sure. There was nothing in it, but the hole's in pretty good shape and could be used soon at least. 27 September 1500. This time there was a ♀ in the hole and a 2nd bird nearby, so I opened the hole, but, amazingly enough, it's still empty...!? 29 September 900. A couple of birds are in the main area here. 30 September Ron suggests that the Canyon area contains 2 ub birds, almost
