1983 Welter D. Koenig 2 Melanerpes formicivorus Lower Haystack HNHR (2 May) numerous times; I only know 9587 was inside briefly once but I had several birds zip in without giving me their bants so she may have been in more. Although I missed birds going in, I'm quite sure I saw everyone coming out, and no eggs were to be seen. I finally checked the hole at 725 and it was empty. Thus, unless I really blew it or everything happened before 530, nobody laid today. (9587 had been laying). 735. Watching again. 755. There's been one additional brief trip into the nest by a ♀ but otherwise things are slow. One more nest check and I'm going home. 800. Still nothing. Leaving. 9 May 600. Nobody and nothing in nest hole. Also checked other holes but only Starlings. Now watching at 608. 630. Some interest - both ♀♀ were at the hole briefly and one (don't know which!) was inside for ~1 min. 718. 9524 inside hole briefly (1 min). 721. 9587 " " " (<1 min). 735. Everybody gone. Going to check the hole just to be sure. 5 June 1645. Counted stores: 1035 + 100 = 1135. Not too shabby.
