1982 1983 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes fomnicivorus Lower Haystack HNHR 28 October 1430. Counted stores up here, where they are already quite loaded: Main tree: 3358 ? 3654. No doubt a 2° tree: 296 } conservative count! 1983 11 January 1500. Counted stores: Main tree: 4409 ? 4757. 2° tree: 348 } Also I took a sample of 50 acorns from low in the granaries. 25 February Ambushed this morning so Susan could remove the breeding & as our first group manipulation. She captured 5 of the 6 birds (all but 8774), and 8461 was removed as planned and put in the aviary. 1200. Now sitting up here in the hide in a fair rainstorm having just relieved Susan on the vigil waiting for a Power Struggle. Needless to say, nothing is going on as yet. 1230. A brief flurry of Wakas and Kanits from somewhere nearby. 8770 now eating an acorn in the granary. All quiet. 8770 just sitting. 1410. It's pouring rain (and has been for about an hour). ? No bird in his right mind would start a Power Struggle on a day like today. In any case, there is no discernible activity worth of note. I'm leaving. 1 March 1340. Watched up here in the rain for a while, but eventually gave up. Not much happening in any case. 2 May 533. Watching. 1? in hole; 2nd entered so both in for a bit right after I got here. Birds kept coming. 8524 was inside
